Abstract
Manual therapy or manipulation is a treatment using hands to improve function in musculoskeletal disorders. The segmental and somatic dysfunctions, which are indications of the manual therapy, refer the dysfunction and abnormality in musculoskeletal system, joints, fascia, and related vascular, lymphatic and nervous tissues. Recently, many physicians in Korea perform the manual therapy for management of musculoskeletal disorders. There are three types of manual therapy according to the principle of treatment; orthopedic manual therapy, osteopathy and chiropractic. Although the principles are different, the treatment techniques are similar among the types. The treatment techniques could roughly be classified to thrust technique and non-thrust techniques. In chiropractics, the thrust techniques are mainly used, while the non-thrust techniques are also used diversely in orthopaedic manual therapy and osteopathy. The thrust techniques should be performed by medical doctors because there are risks of serious complications, such as carotid or vertebral artery dissection, stroke, or fracture. Even the non-thrust techniques should be performed under supervision of medical doctors in hospital.
